Parity Rules D2 as the league goes 9 for it's last 9 with Loud Mouths upset victory

The playoffs started off with a first as the play in game between Iced Out and the Fury was played on the WED before to avoid playing 2 games in the heat. IO scored first on a goal from Culligan in the 1st period followed by a Goldie goal in the 2nd. The game was put out of reach in the 3rd with goals by Fasani and Mellor for a 4-0 victory and shutout for Petron. In the quarters the first game of the day between 2nd seeded Shock and Awe and 7th seeded Group Therapy just happened to be the most exciting of the day. GT jumped out to a quick start in the 1st with goals from Martin and Dan Hanson for a 2-0 lead which stayed that way until the 3rd when SnA's Stone scored back to back goals to tie the game at 2. GT then scored two 3rd period goals from Caudana and Martin again to seemingly ice this game or so they thought. SnA's Mercurio single handedly tied the game up with 2 goals within a minute of each other to tie the score and send the game in to OT. Both teams had a PP opportunity but neither team could capitalize in the full OT period so the game went to the shootout which only happens in the 1st round and hadn't happened in quite some time. Mercurio and D. Jacobeen connected for SnA in the shootout and goaltender Mitchell turned aside all 5 GT's chances and moved the team onto the semi's. The next game was a dog fight as well between the top seeded Stingrays and the 8th seeded Iced Out. Weaver scored on a blast from the point to give the SR's a 1-0 lead and Turbett scored in the 2nd to make it 2-0. Culligan scored for IO in the 2nd to send the game into the 3rd 2-1. IO had numerous chances to tie the game up but were turned away by keeper Erb and the SR's scored an ENG from Vivaritto for the 3-1 final. In yet another great D2 playoff game the 3rd seeded Blues Brothers matched up against the suddenly hot 6th seeded Heavy Breathers. Douglass opened the scoring for HB's and Norman and Einstein scored for a 3-0 lead. Leadston scored to make it 3-1 but HB's Gaskill scored to make it 4-1. A late BB's push on goals from Gusto and Long make it an exciting finish but Douglass scored into an EN to finish off the upset. In what was supposed to be the closest D2 game on paper didn't live up to that as the 4th and 5th seeds matched up. Turner opened the scoring for Top Shelf for a 1-0 lead after 1. The Loud Mouths had 2nd period goals from Hawk and Clark to take a 2-1 to the 3rd. Goals for the LM's by Schroeder and Olivieri sealed the 4-1 final.

In the semi's the top seeded Stingrays and 6th seeded Heavy Breathers played another entertaining game. HB's got on the board first with a goal from their captain Colaluca which was matched by Vivaritto. In the 2nd Waite gave the HB's another lead which was erased in the last minute of the 2nd by Denne. There was no scoring in the 3rd with numerous chances for both teams so OT was needed. Both of these teams were turned away by goaltenders Erb and Meyrow in the 1st OT as well so on to a 2nd OT. Just as the teams and crowd began to wonder if the game would ever end Denne picked off a pass and buried the shot to win the game for the SR's 3-2. The other semifinal game was a matchup between Shock and Awe and Loud Mouths and it wasn't quite as entertaining. Hawk scored first for the LM's before captain Anderson added a goal in the 3rd for a 2-0 lead and McPartland finished the game off with an EN goal for a 3-0 final and shutout for Eisenstein.

The favorite Stingrays were back in the finals against the Loud Mouths who made their first championship game with their new team name this season. The game started off a little slow as both teams were feeling each other out and the game was scoreless after one. The 2nd period saw more saves from keepers Erb and Eisenstein to send the game into the 3rd 0-0. The SR's got on the board first 5 minutes into the 3rd on goal by Vivaritto from Youngs. The LM's just couldn't seem to figure out Erb and pulled their goalie in the final minute and as the clock ran down their chances of tying the game seemed bleak but a dump in on net resulted in a missed clear which was taken by Garvey who made a nice move on a breakaway and sent the game to OT with just 3 seconds left. The SR's still seemed stunned in OT as the game opened up more before LM's captain Anderson roofed the game winner to win the D2 Championship and Cup for his team 2-1.

Congrats to postseason MVP Ian Anderson of Loud Mouths, MVG Adam Eisenstein also of LM's and the SR's MVP of the playoffs Justin Vivaritto. Congrats also to regular season scoring leader Vivaritto of the Stingrays with 16 G's and 25 points as well as Shock and Awe's Scott Mitchell, who tied with Nate Erb of the Stingrays, with 6 wins each and Mitchell had a league leading 2.33 GAA. Once again D2 is the parity division as the league has had 9 different champions in 9 seasons. So, will Shock and Awe, Fury or Heavy Breathers continue this trend or even possibly District 5 in their first season? Stay tuned and good luck to everyone this summer/fall '10 season...
