Phantoms Return To Glory with Blowout Victory over Hitmen

The D1 playoffs started with a matchup between the 3rd seeded Gladiators and 6th seeded Sin City. The G's struck quickly on goals from E. Emilo and Lydic and a 2-0 lead after one. Stone scored for the G's to make it 3-0 before Hines scored a PP goal for SC to make it 3-1. Bellamente finished the scoring off for the G's for a 4-1 final. The next game pitted the top seeded Phantoms vs 8th seeded Mantis. Trzeciak scored 1st for the P's which was matched by M's Malfara for a close 1-1 game after 1. Sidhu and Juraska scored for the P's for a 3-1 lead after 2 but M didn't quit as Bass scored a goal early in the 3rd to make it 3-2. The P's then erupted for 4 straight goals from Kudrick, Jeff Dunn, Trzeciak again and Joey Dunn for a 7-2 final. Then there was the most anticipated game of the night between the 4th seeded MD Sparks and the 4 time champion Haze. Roby started the scoring for MDS which was matched on a goal by the H's Wilt. Then the Sparks got into serious penalty trouble with 3 straight penalties for a rather extended 5 on 3 PP. The H capitalized quickly with a goal from Adukaitis and had numerous chances to build an important 2 goal lead but couldn't. The MDS then got a PP goal of their own from Insley to tie the game at 2. Insley stuck again in the 2nd period to give the Sparks a 3-2 advantage going to the 3rd. Makowsky held the Haze off of the scoresheet in the 3rd which ended the Haze Dynasty. The last D1 game of the night ended up being another barnburner between the 2nd seeded Hitmen and 7th seeded Plague. The P jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st minute on a goal from Weber. The P took a penalty which was an all toofamiliar theme for the game and the H's Ross capitalized to tie the game at 1. The H's D'agnillo scored to give his team a 2-1 lead which was the score going into the 3rd. The P's Cowles scored to tie the game at 2 and set his team up for a potential upset. Wilson crushed those hopes with a goal for the H late in the 3rd which proved to be the game winner in the 3-2 final.

The first semifinal game was between 2 defensive minded teams in the 2nd seeded Hitmen and 3rd seeded Gladiators. The game proved to be spot on as the game was tied a 0 after the 1st. The G's thought they had scored first but the ball had gone through a hole in the side of the net and the game remained scoreless. Seemingly distraught by the potential goal not going in they gave too good of a scoring chance to sniper McBride who buried a shot and gave the H a 1-0 lead. The goal ended up being the only one of the game as Brush turned aside every scoring chance in the 1-0 final. The other game was a matchup of longtime rivals between the top seeded Phantoms and 4th seeded MD Sparks. The P's came out firing on all cylinders as goals by Evans (2) and Mercurio gave them a 3-0 lead halfway through the 1st which lead to a very early timeout by MDS. Gedrich got the MDS on the scoreboard in the 2nd which was followed by a breakaway goal by Roby and a 3-2 game going into the 3rd. The Sparks kept battling and tied the game at 3-3 on another goal by Roby on a scrum in front of the net to take all of the momentum. The P's Joey Dunn redirected a pass from Freimann to take the lead 4-3 which was followed up by a PP goal from Hatchuel from Barrett which sent the P's back to the finals with a 5-3 victory.

The finals were a rematch of a finals from 5 years ago between the Phantoms and Hitmen and one team was guaranteed to win the Cup for the first time in years. The league's 2 top seeded teams figured to be a battle but ended up being far from that. Joey Dunn opened the scoring for the P's for a 1-0 lead after 1. Greenwell and Jeff Dunn scored for the P's for a 3-0 lead going into the 3rd. A few outstanding saves from Macquarrie kept the Hitmen scoreless and the Kudrick connected on the PP for 4-0 lead that pretty much sealed the game. Greenwell connected again as well as Sidhu and teams kind of just waited for the last minutes to end. The whistle sounded and the Phantoms were once again on top of the league and the Commish grabbed the Cup for the first time in 4 years.

Congrats to postseason MVP Joey Dunn of the Phantoms, MVG Scott MacQuarrie also of the Phantoms and the Hitmen's MVP of the playoffs Eddie Desabetino for their awards. Congrats also to regular season scoring leaders Dave McBride of the Hitmen and Kevin Roby of the Sparks for leading the league with 13 points and Mcbride with 10 Goals as well as Macquarrie of the Phantoms with 8 Wins and Towner French of the Gladiators for his 1.00 GAA. Will the Phantoms repeat again, will the Haze win to take 4 out of 5, will the Sparks win back the Cup for the first time in 6 years, will the Gladiators win their first Cup or will someone else take it? Find out this summer/fall season when the league starts on AUG 1st.
