DC's Women's Team Finally Wins an Open Tournament

DC's Flying V's won Beach Bash this past August in Ocean City, MD for their 1st championship after numerous 2nd place finishes. The team consisted of 5 local players (Steph Holland, Kate Carrigan, Laura Nilsen, Beth Penfield and Julia Bronson) and many from CT as well as PA. The team finished round robin play with the 1st seed and proceeded to beat the NY Bruisers 2-1 in the semi's. After falling behind 1-0, Chantelle Church tied the game and Julia Bronson notched the game winner to lead the team to the finals. In the finals the V's squared up against top seeded Peanut Butter Jelly Time loaded with numerous team USA players. The team once again fell behind but a blast from the point by defensemen Liz Petry tied the game and sent the momentum the other way. Chantelle Church pulled the V's ahead on a pass from Julia Bronson and followed that with another goal on a pass from Laura Nilsen for a 3-1 victory. The team finally had that open championship (Stick Tease won the B bracket at North Americans) it so deserved after many disappointing finals for coaches Wayne Barrett and Mike Waite.

The tournament MVP was Chantelle Church, MVD was Kate Carrigan and MVG Suzanne Obesk, all from the V's. The offense was led by the line of Church, Julia Bronson and Laura Nilsen with the line of Captain Steph Holland, Naomi McConnell and Kelly O'Connell creating great forechecking. The defense was led by Carrigan, Liz Petry, Beth Penfield and Amy Cobb in front of goalkeeper Obesk, who was filling in for injured Flying V's keeper Adele King. Congrats to this team for winning the championship with quite a few new players and the team is looking forward to the Holiday Bash in Feasterville, PA the first week in DEC as well as the North American Championships the last weekend in MAR also in Feasterville, PA.
