Group Therapy Makes it Ten for Ten

The SUN D2 playoffs started off with 2 play in games on a WED night for the first time. The first match up featured the 7th seeded Stingrays vs. the 10th seeded Blues Brothers. The SR's scored the first 3 goals and easily handled the BB's 4-1 behind 2 goals each from Vivaritto and Denne with the lone BB's goal scored by Hazlett. The 8th seeded Iced Out blew out the 9th seeded Fury with a rare offensive explosion behind a hat trick from Fasani, 2 from Zander and the last from captain Mellor. The lone goal for the FY was scored by Delmonaco in the 6-1 defeat. In the quarters 3rd seeded Top Shelf had a relatively easy time beating the 6th seeded Heavy Breathers 4-1 who missed leading scorer Skiavo. The TS goals were scored by Quadt (2), Christiano and Turner and the lone HB's goal was scored by Christensen. The next game between 4th seeded Shock and Awe and 5th seeded Distict 5 was a battle. SNA scored the first 2 goals from Mi. Jacobeen and Hines and held a 2-0 lead going to the 3rd. D5, in their first season, battled back in the 3rd to tie the game on goals from Scott and Leadston before Hines scored again to seal the 3-2 victory for SNA. The biggest upset of the day belonged to the Stingrays who upset 2nd seeded Mantis 5-2. MS scored the games first 2 goals from Koszyk before the SR's came back with a goal from Vivaritto and 2 from Denne, the last being the GW in the 3rd, before an EN hat trick and another EN from Vivaritto made the final 5-2. The last game of the night featured top seeded Group Therapy and 8th seeded Iced Out. After 2 scoreless periods IO struck first on a goal from Harris and seemed staged for the huge upset before GT's Martin struck on the PP late and then Mercurio scored the game winner in the last minute for the 2-1 final. IO gave their all and probably deserved the win but just couldn't hang on or put the game away and GT escaped and moved on to the semis.

In the semi's Shock and Awe took on Top Shelf. Boersma got SNA on the board first for a 1-0 lead after one. Leblanc scored for TS in the 2nd to tie the game at 1 after the 2nd. TS goalie Kunin and SNA goalie Mitchell took over in the 3rd and held the teams scoreless which sent the game to OT. Mi. Jacobeen played hero for SNA by scoring the game winner 10 minutes into OT to send his team into the finals. Top seeded Group Therapy took on the Stingrays in another great semifinal game that went to OT. Vivaritto struck first for the SR's for a 1-0 lead after 1. GT's Martin scored in the 2nd to send the game into the 3rd tied where goaltenders Erb and Webb stole the show and sent the game into OT. Martin of GT was once again the hero for his team as he scored the GWG 2 minutes into OT to send his team to the championship game.

Group Therapy was back in the finals for the first time in quite some time and Shock and Awe for the first time. The weather was about 20 degrees which kept away the majority of the fans as the D1 finals had been played the week before though two of the top ten were seen observing and drinking 40's. SNA got on the board early in the first few minutes to take a 1-0 lead on a goal from D. Jacobeen that took a strange bounce. GT regrouped later in the period and scored 2 goals thirty seconds apart. The first was Mercurio from Andrews and the 2nd from Andrews which was a great time for his first of the season as of a member of GT. Martin struck again for his team in the 2nd to give GT a comfortable 3-1 lead going to the 3rd. GT's Webb made the lead stick in the 3rd and GT were once again champs after a long 6 yearbreak from the Cup. Thanks to the 3 captains of GT (Bill King, Jeff Hanson and Danny Narragon)

Congrats to post season MVP John Martin of GT for a great postseason run, MVG Scott Webb also of GT and to SNA'spostseason MVP Michael Jacobeen. Congrats also to Justin Vivaritto for leading D2 in goals and assists in the regular season with 16 and 20 respectively. Congrats to Mantis' Michael Bender of Mantis for leading D2 with a unheard of 0.63 GAA for the regular season and Scott Webb of GT for leading D2 with 8 victories. Have a great winter and I look forward to seeing all of your teams back March 6th for the start of the new season.
