Golden Molsen Fills the Cup

Draft League Season 17 started off with a matchup between top seeded Warning: Hazardous Cargo and last place We Dump In The Corner. The game was scoreless after the first but WDITC was no match for W:HC without their top pick Desab in the lineup and the game turned into a rout with W:HC winning 5-0 on goals from Hines (2), Clark, Groves and O'Keefe. The next game was also a blow out between Jersey Shore Spray Tanand Malcontents. JSST got goals from Colaluca, Greeney, Kudrick, Mamon and Sonnenberg with M's lone goal scored by Diamond in the 5-1 final. The next game was the game of the playoffs for this season betweentop seeded U.S. Marshalls and last place Smashing Bumpkins. Ashley got USM's on the board first before SB's scored 2 goals from Malley and Evans to take a 2-1 lead. Benson answered for USM's to tie the game at 2 after the first. Malley again tallied for SB's in the 2nd for a 3-2 lead which was short lived as USM's Wilt matched it with a goal of his own for 3-3 tie after two. The score stayed the same through the 3rd and went to OT where USM's got a lucky bounce off a missed shot and Skiavo was there to knock it in to avoid a shootout and send his team on to the semi's. The last game of the night featured Golden Molson vs Ride Porpy. GM scored a goal per period to walk away with a pretty easy 3-0 victory on goals from Houston, Gleeson and Fitz.

The semi's started off with a game between JSST and USM's. USM's wasted no time scoring as they took advantage of a defensive miscue at the point which led to a 3 on 1 break and Ashley stuffed the rebound in for a quick 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game. USM's struck again late in the first on a goal by Holtzman on an apparent missed hand pass and that was all they needed to hold off a lackluster effort from JSST to send them to the finals. The other game was much more exciting as GM took on top seeded W:HC. GM got off to a quick start with goals from Chernacov and a PP marker from Fitz for a 2-0 lead after the first. The game remained 2-0 after 2 and through most of the 3rd before W:HC struck for a goal from Groves with about 7 minutes left in the game. W:HC then pulled their goalie and made it count with a goal from captain Jacob with 46 seconds remaining in the game to tie it and send the game to OT to the delight of the fans in the freezing temps. W:HC dominated the first few OT's only to be turned away continuously by GM goaltender Erb. The game went to a 3rd OT and even a 4th to set a league record as Erb and W:HC goaltender Cuocci kept the score tied at 2. When the game went to a 5th OT the fans just wanted somebody to score and that finally happened on, what many expected, a bad bounce goal. Houston shot from near center line hit keeper Cuocci's stick and caromed into the net for the game winner in a game neither team deserved to lose. Erb stood on his head throughout the night, with about 50 saves, to carry his team into the finals.

The finals were delayed a week by weather and almost another week but due to rink maintenance by the Commish and quite a few USM players the game was played about a half an hour late. The game had a scoreless first in a feeling out period. GM's Scioscia swatted a ball towards the net and it found its way in early in the 2nd to give his team the lead. Douglass matched that for USM's with redirection goal for a 1-1 tie after two. GM's B. Florkowski scored just 17 seconds into the 3rd on a point shot that found its way through to give his team a much needed 2-1 lead. The goal ended up standing as the game winner as USM's were never able to get another goal on GM's Erb and the final was 2-1 in a very mellow championship game. Congrats to Captain Pat McDonough who won the Cup in his 2nd season as captain. Congrats also to playoff MVP and MVG Nate Erb from Golden Molson, Tom Houston, also from GM, as MVF and Matt Ashley who was named MVP for U.S. Marshalls in their playoff run.

Congrats to the regular season award winners as well: Jake Denne of W:HC led the league in Goals (15) and points (20) Mike Makowsky of Malcontents with a 1.89 GAA and George Ward from USM's and Nate Erb of GM with 6 wins a piece. Thanks to all players and especially the captains on another close and entertaining season and good luck to everyone in Draft Season 18 already underway. This will be the last set of names to go on the 2nd Cup so let's see who can lead their team to have their names engraved on the trophy...
