Green is Money

The first game of the 18th Draft League season's playoffs was an adventure in itself in the quarterfinals. Charlie Hustle got on the board first on a goal from Ashley. The French Tickler's Trzeciak scored to tie the game at 1 going to the 3rd. CH was awarded a penalty shot as a player from FT's, name protected for obvious reasons, shuffled the ball out of the crease with his hand. The PS was converted by Wozny on a nifty backhander.  The FT's got a late PP and made CH pay for it with a huge goal from Freimann to send the game into OT. Goaltenders French and Weidenkopf kept both teams off of the board in the OT and the game went to a shootout where the FT's surely had to be the favorite with the tournament tested French in net. Not the case as goals by Wilt and Wozny in the shootout won the shootout after the first 4 FT shooters were denied by Weidenkopf.  The next game was the least competitive game of the night as Big Green Machine crushed a flat Dunn's Dirty Dozen team missing their first round pick. Goals from J. Greeen and Hoff in the first gave them a 2-0 lead after one. Jacob pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 2nd before DDD finally got on the board with a goal from McDonough. Hanson scored the final 2 goals for BGM for the 5-1 final score.  The third game was between Life Of Leadston, without the Leadston, and It's Academic with a few players out as well. The goalies were the story of this game as both Erb and Makowsky were on their games. LOL controlled much of the 2nd and 3rd periods but the game went to OT. IA took charge in OT but LOL got a goal from an unlucky hero named Topercer who called his goal the shift before he went on for a 1-0 victory late in OT. The last game of the night featured the top team in the regular season, Warm Red Center, versus the bottom team, Skiavo's Diablo who were severe underdogs but that's why they play the games. After a scoreless first Hawk got SD's on the board first for a 1-0 lead after 2. WRC tied the score up with a goal from Currie a minute into the 3rd. After that WRC took control of the game but couldn't get anything else past SD's goaltender Petron who played lights out. SD's scored with 1:22 left in the game on a goal from captain Skiavo which provided the winning margin in an upset that left captain Robinson wondering if Warm Red Center was really cooked long enough.

The semi's were the first time in league history that all 4 remaining teams had a record under .500 but that didn't mean anything as the games were still exciting to watch. The first game was between Charlie Hustle and Life of Leadston. CH's Wilt and Wozny scored early to take a quick 2-0 which is where the first period finished. A goal by Barrett chopped the lead in half but the lead was quickly restored by Popkin for a 3-1 lead after two. A goal from Wagner of CH put the game seemingly out of reach at 4-1 but LOL didn't give up. A late PP goal from Leadston followed by another blast from Leadston made the game quite interesting and put a scare into CH. A late last minute surge of shots couldn't find the net and LOL ran out of time and lost 4-3 to CH. In the other semifinal game between Big Green Machine and Skiavo's Diablos BGM scored two quick goals from Hoff and J. Green for a 2-0 lead after the first.  After a scoreless second period Howdeshell and Genest scored back to back goals in the 3rd to tie the game up and make the game a battle. A goal from Dyke late in the 3rd gave BGM the lead and victory 3-2 in a tough loss for SD's. Congrats to captain Skiavo for rallying his troops in the playoffs after a tough regular season. This is what this draft league is all about.

After all of the exciting playoff games this season everyone was expecting a great championship game. The game didn't live up to expectations as neither team seemed to get in a groove in a scoreless first as Young of BGM has the only quality scoring chances of the period. BGM's Dyke got on the board with a nice shot from the high slot on a pass from Hoff and the score held for a 1-0 lead after two.  CH tried to get things going in the 3rd but couldn't generate any offense even on a 3rd period PP.  After a few late chances that were turned away by goaltender Bender the game finished an not so fan friendly 1-0.  Congrats to captain Ryan Jacob for winning his his first Cup as a captain. Congats to BGM's Bender for being named MVG of the playoffs, BGM's Hoff for being named MVD and Dyke also of BGM for being named MVP of the playoffs.  Wozny was voted CH's top player in the playoffs. Congrats also to regular season points winner Curt Evans of Warm Red Center who scored 12 points in just 9 games with J. Green and Houston tied with 12 as well in the full 10 games. Congrats also to Makowsky of It's Academic for leading the goalies in the regular season with a 1.60 GAA and Cuocci of Warm Red Center for leading the regular season with 6 wins.  Well, that's a wrap for season 18 as these 13 names will be the last on this 2nd draft league Cup. Stay tuned if we buy a new Cup or add another base below the current one. Thanks again to the captains who make this league work and good luck to all of the new teams that are starting the new season ASAP.
