Phantoms Win Best of 3 Title

The D1 finals got off to a solid start with a quarterfinal game between 2nd seeded Sin City and the 7th seeded Gladiators.  SC jumped on the G's early with 2 first period goals from Agostinelli and Popkin for a 2-0 lead after one. After a scoreless 2nd the G's finally got on the board with a PPG from Lewis and brought a ton of pressure and shots that were turned aside by SC netminder Bender and SC held on for the 2-1 victory. The next game featured the top seeded Phantoms vs. the 8th seeded Group Therapy.  The P's got an early goal from McIlwain for a 1-0 lead which lasted until Jeff Dunn struck twice in the 2nd for a 3-0 lead going to the 3rd. Trzeciak scored for the P's in the 3rd for the 4-0 final. The game of the night featured the 4th seeded Plague against the 5th seeded Hitmen.  D'Agnillo scored first to give the H a 1-0 lead that was matched by the P's Cowles for a 1-1 score after 1. Cowles struck again in the 2nd for a 2-1 lead after two for the P.  Contreras scored for the H halfway through the  3rd to tie the score and struck again with 5 minutes to play with the game winning goal that moved the H onto the semi's and left the P stunned. In the last D1 game of the night the 6th seeded MD Sparks scored 2 goals in the  first against the 3rd seeded Haze. The goals were scored by Dyke and Roby and the S's struck again in the 2nd on another goal by Roby to take a commanding 3-0 lead which stuck for the final score.

The semi's first match up was between long time bitter rivals the Phantoms and the MD Sparks. The teams played a couple scoreless periods with the teams trading chances that were continuously turned away by MacQuarrie and Makowsky.  The P's couldn't seem to solve the S's keeper and the game went to OT scoreless.  The S's Roby had a great chance to win the game from the high slot but Scotty Mac turned the shot away and the P's capitalized a minute later on a fluke goal on a badly communicated pass from keeper to dman which Dunn turned into a GWOTG with a quick jab at the ball and the P's moved onto the finals and the S's were left stunned after an inspired effort that wasn't quite enough. The other semi's was a first time playoff game between SC and the Hitmen which also had a scoreless first period. The H got on the board 5 minutes into the 2nd on a goal by Wozny for a 1-0 lead after 2. SC brought the house in the 3rd period but couldn't solve the H's Brush and the H's Leadston iced the game for his team with an ENG which stung even more with Leadston's defection from SC a few seasons back.

The finals featured the same two teams for the 3rd straight season which is a league first for D1 which basically meant the winner would win the best of 3 series. The P's struck first late in the first on a goal from Freimann which gave them a 1-0 lead after one. The H struck back on a goal from Rentzepis 5 minutes into the 2nd to tie the score up. The P's Trzeciak restored the his team's one goal lead a few minutes after for a 2-1 lead after two. The H of course wouldn't go away as they killed off a few PP's and tied the score 7 minutes into the 3rd on a goal from Contreras. The P's would take a costly delay of game penalty in the last minute of the 3rd but game went to OT tied at 2. The P's killed off the last minute of the penalty and the teams traded quality scoring chances for the next five minutes. The P's scored 7:52 into OT on a shot from the point from Juraska off a face off win from Barrett and the team celebrated. Congrats to playoff MVP Jeff Dunn of the P's, MVD and finals MVP Jim Juraska of the P's, Felice D'Agnillo for MVP of the H and MVG Scotty MacQuarrie of the P's for their postseason awards.

Congrats to the regular season winners as well:  Kevin Roby of the MD Sparks with 18 points, Dave Leadston of the Hitmen with 13 goals, Scotty Mac of the Phantoms with 8 Wins and Mike Bender of Sin City with a 1.00 GAA. Now let's see if one of these other teams can make sure we don't have a 4th straight matchup between these teams. Good luck to all D1 teams this season including Top Shelf who replaced GT in the top division.
