The Six-Week Playoff

Season 19 of the WED Night Draft League got off to a slow start in the first game between Moose Knuckles and Porcelain Gods.  MK's got the first goal of the game on a point shot from Ginevan off of a face off win from Barrett.  Erb made that goal stand up with strong play in net before Kelley iced the game with an EN for a 2-0 victory.  The next game was another low scoring contest between the top seeded Hinesight's 20/20 and the last place Vancouver Riot.  The game was scoreless after two periods on solid goaltending from Cuocci and Eisenstein. The VR broke through 5 minutes into the 3rd on a goal from Douglass assisted by captain Leadston.  That goal was the game winner and only one of the contest in this monumental upset.  The 3rd game of the night was Don't Know against Z-Harmony. In yet another low scoring game the teams went to the 3rd period scoreless. DK's Dunner got on the board first assisted by Phillips 2 minutes into the 3rd. ZH quickly responded with a goal a minute later from Lewis from Zimmerman.  The teams couldn't get another goal before the end of regulation as keepers Makowsky and Webb made save after save.  Three minutes into OT Lewis struck again on a somewhat controversial goal that had some interference with the goalie but was ruled a goal as the defensive player had shoved Lewis into the keeper which seemed to be the right call though quite a tough way to lose your season. The last game of the night had first place and top seed Bend Er Over against the last place Battling Buccos.  The BB's were playing without their top pick, Houston, who was out  injured which was a big break for BEO.  Dyke got BEO on the board first 6 minutes into the 2nd period and the game stayed that way late into the contest but the BB's pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and the move paid off with a highlight reel goal from team captain McDonough from Peich with 41 seconds remaining to send the game into OT.  The game went back and forth and seemed headed for a shootout as the final seconds ticked down but Weaver kept the ball in at the point and shot it towards the BB's net where it hit off of Van and went past keeper Ward with a heartbreaking goal with 2 seconds left in OT.  All four games were once again one goal contests minus one game with an EN.

Round two started off with another close game between Z-Harmony and Moose Knuckles. After a scoreless period, ZH got on the board in the 2nd with a goal from Jacob assisted by Lewis for a 1-0 lead after the 2nd. The commish, after missing a period stopping the blood after blocking a shot to the nose from Lewis, returned and MK's  still couldn't get anything in the net. Finally, Skiavo got one by Webb with 2 minutes left and with ZH still reeling from that goal, MK's Fay scored another with a little over a minute left to steal a victory from ZH and move onto the finals. The other game wasn't quite as close as Bend Er Over blew the Vancouver Riot out from the opening face off. Goals were scored by Hanson, Dyke, Weaver and Denne in a 4- victory that sent the top seed into the finals.

The finals were a match up between top seeded Bend Er Over and the Moose Knuckles squad that was trying to get JImmy "The Payne Train" Payne his first Draft League Cup. BEO got on the board on the very first shift on a rebound goal from Dyke.  Halfway through the first BEO struck again on a goal by Jeziorski on a great pass from Young on a 2 on 1. Dyke scored again halfway through the 2nd for a 3-0 lead before MK's Kelley finally got on the board at the end of the period to make it 3-1 going to the 3rd.  MK's had numerous chances midway through the 3rd including a 5 on 3 PP that included many great saves by keeper Bender especially on Popkin alone in front of the net.  After failing on numerous opportunities in the 3rd BEO sealed the game with an ENG with a little over a minute left for a 4-1 final that left MK's disappointed they couldn't win the Cup for Payne. Congrats to post season MVP Brian Dyke of BEO, MVG Mike Bender also of BEO and MVF Tom Skiavo of MK's.

Congrats to the regular season league leaders as well:  Jeff Hanson With 17 points, Jake Denne with 13 goals and Mike Bender with 8 wins and a 1.44 GAA.  Thanks to all of the captains and refs for helping this league run so smoothly. Good luck to everyone in season 20 which includes a few rookie captains trying to get their names on the Cup.  Please check out the first ever DCSH newsletter that Sid just sent out and let me know your thoughts...
