Haze Dynasty Wins 4th Cup in a Row to Tie League Record

The top division's playoffs started off with the 3rd seeded Hitmen up against the 6th seeded Sin City. SC had played well down the stretch but today wasn't their day as the Hitmen struck early on a goal by Wozny and followed that later on in the game with goals by Wilson(2), Houston and Desabetino (Desab). SC's lone goal was scored by Eickmeier. The next game had top seeded Gladiators facing off against the over matched Stingrays. The G's scored early and often in an 8-1 victory over the shorthanded SR's. G's goals were scored by Green(2), E. Emilo(2), Lewis, Byrd, Stone and Alexandre. Vivaritto was responsible for the SR's goal. Thanks to the SR's for toughing it out in D1 and are on their way back to D2. In the most exciting and anticipated game of the day the 4th seeded Flights squared off against their longtime rivals the 5th seeded Phantoms. Tickets for this game were going for astronomical prices on craigslist and the game didn't disappoint though it wasn't as physical as most had anticipated. The P's jumped on the board 1st on a goal from defensive dman Kudrick but was quickly matched by Insley for the F's. The F's jumped on the P's with a 2 goal shift in the 2nd period from Roby and Insley again and headed into the 3rd up 3-1. The P's Joey Dunn picked a great time to score his 1st goal as a Phantom about halfway through the period to make it 3-2. Goaltender Makowsky of the F's helped maintain the lead until the P's pulled their goalie and Sidhu (Sid) scored the game tying goal in the last minute to send the game to OT. Sidhu of the P's would strike again early in OT to send the Phantoms on to the semi's and the send the Flights home with a tough to swallow loss. In the last D1 game of the night the 2nd seeded Haze were up against the 7th seeded Plague. The P have given the H fits in the past and this game was no different as they started off strong and the H had goaltender Pagel to thank for keeping the game scoreless. Wilt got the Haze on the board first and the game was a dogfight until Douglass gave the H some breathing room finally getting a shot through Plague goalie Howell for a 2-0 lead. Empty net goals by Adukaitis (Adu) and O'keefe accounted for the 4-0 victory behind Pagel's shutout.

In the semi's the top seeded Gladiators matched up with the Phantoms. The P's got on the board 1st with a goal from Jeff Dunn which was matched later in the 1st period by the G's Green. The P's once again took the lead in the 2nd on another goal from the same combo of Jeff Dunn on a breakaway from Friemann. The G's went into the 3rd period down 2-1 but once again Green lit the lamp to tie the game. The P's controlled the tempo and pace but were repeatedly denied by sub goalie Freudberg before Lydic threw in a shot from the point that went off of Sidhu's backside for the game winning goal and 3-2 victory for the G's which propelled them into their 1st ever finals. The 2nd game featured the Haze vs. the Hitmen in what was sure to be a defensive battle. The Hitmen got on the board first with a goal from Houston and had numerous power plays to take control of the game but couldn't convert and they eventually gave up a momentum changing short handed goal to the Haze's Wilt which seemed to spark the team. The Hitmen still had quite a few power plays and even a lengthy 5 on 3 which they couldn't connect on so the game went on tied. The Haze took the lead for good in the 3rd on a goal from O'Keefe which ended up being the final score and sent the Haze back to the finals again. The battle for street hockey supremacy pitted the top ranked Gladiators vs. the 3 time champion Haze for DC Street Hockey bragging rights. The teams played a scoreless first in a feeling out process sort of period. The G's jumped on the board first with a goal from Bellemente from Green to open the scoring and took a 1-0 lead into the 3rd and had numerous chances to build on that lead that were denied by Haze keeper Pagel. With the G's seeming to need that next goal to take control of the game they just couldn't get it and the Haze finally cashed in on a shot from O'keefe that hit off of Shea in front of the net and the game was tied at 1. The G's were still reeling from giving up that goal as the Haze scored again on the very next shift on a goal from Wilt on a great pass from Mahtesian and the game's momentum changed 100% towards the Haze. The Haze locked the game down from there and held on for a 2-1 victory for the 4peat to lay claim to the area's top team. All that was left was the Cup presentation to Haze captain Waite and the Cup was drenched with beverages by the celebrating team.

Congrats to postseason MVP/MVG Stan Pagel from the Haze, MVF Jerry Green from the Gladiators and also MVF Paul Wilt of the Haze. Regular season awards go to John Hines from Sin City (must be a misprint or he added points) :) for leading the league in points with 14, Dave McBride of the Hitmen for leading the league in goals with 10, Towner French and Josh Brush for leading the goalies with 6 wins a piece and French for his league record 0.43 GAA. The Haze are continuing with a trend of repeat winners in D1 which is in need of some D2 parity. Congrats to the Haze for tying the Phantoms all time record of 4 championships in a row and will shoot to break the record with a 5th when the new season starts Sunday, March 7th. Thanks to everyone for another great season and see all of you in the WED league or around until March 7th.
