A Sinful Change at the Top

The D1 playoffs started out with a barnburner between the 2nd seeded Sin City and the 7th seeded Haze. Rice got SC on the board followed by a goal from teammate Denne for a quick 2-0 lead. The H matched that with a goal from Wilt with 4 minutes left in the period and another on the PP from Wagner for a 2-2 game after the first. League Chef/DJ scored a minute into the 2nd for a 3-2 lead, and league Webmaster Douglass also scored for the H for a 4-2 lead but Hines scored for SC to make it 4-3 going into the 3rd. Early in the 3rd Denne struck again for SC to tie the game at 4 before Douglass matched him for the H halfway through the period to take a 5-4 lead. SC tied the game with 4 minutes left as Denne completed the hat trick on a miscommunication by the defense that left the sniper alone in the slot and the tally sent the game into OT. SC won the game 7 minutes into OT on a fluke goal off a centering pass that hit off of Gregg's body and went into the net for a disappointing ending to a fantastic playoff game. The next game was anything but the first one as the top ranked Sparks disposed of the 8th seeded Top Shelf quickly and easily 9-2. Goals from the S's were scored by Insley, Mach(2), Dyke(2), Roby, White, Genest and Kalender and TS's goals were scored by Kourt and the Payne Train. Thanks to TS for playing hard all season in D1. The next game is usually the championships for D1 (the last 3 seasons) but this season the Phantoms and Hitmen only had identical 5-4-1 records hence the quarterfinal matchup. The game didn't disappoint as both teams played as if it were the finals. The H got on the board first on a goal from the league's leading scorer, D'Agnillo, before being matched by the Phantoms Hatchuel. The P's took the lead on a goal from Barrett and another from Juraska to seal the victory and send the Hitmen home early. The last game of the night was a matchup between the 3rd seeded Gladiators, who got red hot at the end of the season, against the 6th seeded Plague. The G's wanted to keep the game a low scoring affair and they had their wish as keepers French and Tardivo held both teams at bay and the game headed to the 3rd scoreless. Lewis finally scored the games only goal in the 3rd and the P just couldn't get anything in the net and fell 1-0 to the G's.

The semi's started off with a matchup of the 2nd seeded Sin City and 3rd seeded Gladiators. The teams played a tight defensive game and the game was scoreless after 2 periods. In the 3rd the teams traded scoring chances before the G's Green scored on a nice shot from the slot with just 4 minutes left that looked as if it would propel them into the finals. SC called timeout and regrouped as Hines scored with 2 minutes left to send the game to OT. When teams go to OT everyone knows anything can happen as was the case here as a shot from Denne skipped off of the ground/rink and evaded a less than happy French in net to put SC into their first D1 finals. French was heard cursing obscenities at rink owner Raue immediately after the goal went in. SC has turned into a team that owns OT the past few weeks with another great game. The other semifinal game featured long time league rivals as the top seeded MD Sparks took on the 5th seeded Phantoms. The P's scored first as Evans found the net for a 1-0 lead after one. The MDS's scored on a broken face off win as Ferreira outran the P's defenders and scored on a breakaway to the tie the game at 1. Freimann restored the P's lead before Genest matched him with a little over a minute left. The P's scored again in the last minute of the 2nd on a goal from Kudrick to send the game to the 3rd 3-2. The MDS's were running out of time but a PPG from Dyke with 3 minutes left on a great passing play tied the game up and sent it to OT. The P's simply have the MDS's number in the playoffs as Greenwell knocked in a pass from Barrett 3 minutes into OT to end the the S's great season again 4-3 in OT.

The finals featured Sin City in their very first finals against the Phantoms who were in the finals for a fourth straight season. The P's failed to score on an early play and SC fed off of the momentum and scored a goal from Vivirito. Late in the period SC struck with the clock counting down as Zimmerman's shot beat Ted's countdown and severely hurt the P's heading into the 2nd being down two after outplaying SC. The P's came out strong in the 2nd period with numerous scoring chances but just couldn't get one past Bender and SC held the 2 goal lead heading into the 3rd. More of the same in the 3rd as the P's were determined to get a goal to put the pressure on controlling play but just couldn't score and with the team pressing SC broke out with 3 minutes left an iced the game on another goal from Zimmerman to ice the game and bring SC their first D1 Cup with a 3-0 victory. Congrats to SC for years of hard work in building their team into what it is now. Congrats to playoff MVP Adam Zimmerman of SC, MFG Michael Bender also of SC and MVF Curt Evans of the P's. Looking forward to the new D1 season with the Stingrays returning on SUN, March 4th. Thanks to all the captains, refs and others that make this league the best street hockey league, minus the surface/rink.

Congrats to all of the regular season leaders as well:

Felice D'Agnillo of the Hitmen for leading the league in goals with 11 and points with 19
Michael Bender of Sin City for leading goalies with a 1.50 GAA
Scott Webb of the MD Sparks for leading keepers with 6 victories
