Marshmallows on Fire

Season 20 of the Draft League was one of the longest in history as the season lasted just over 5 months even with a mild winter. The first round of the playoffs had the usual close games and upsets starting with 2nd place Two Minutes Turkish vs 3rd place Nocturnal Emishan. NE's captain Freimann jumped all over TMT with two 1st period goals to set the tone for the game. The game was scoreless in the 2nd as TMT just couldn't get their offense going before NE's Currie iced the game with a beautiful one timer 3 minutes into the 3rd. NE's Erb made the score stand with the shutout. The next game featured top seeded Marshmallows vs a depleted 4th place Frosted Flakes squad. M's jumped all over FF's with 3 goals in the 1st period from Wilt, Clark and Ashley to put a strangle hold on the game. The score held the rest of the way as Ward made some big saves for the 3-0 win over FF's who were missing their top 2 draft picks. The next game was by far the most exciting of the night as Occupy Seminary squared off against Second Chances. OS's Ginevan scored a rare goal to give them a 1-0 lead which was matched by SC's Gleeson for a 1-1 game after the first. The 2nd period was scoreless before OS's captain Fay scored to give his team a 2-1 lead in the 3rd. SC's wouldn't give up as Gleeson notched another one to tie it up at 2 and send the game to OT. The keepers were the story of OT as both Howell and Petron held their own and the game went on to a shootout as the 1st round is the only round where shootouts are used due to time restraints. SC's went first and Gleeson scored for a 1-0 lead. O'Keefe missed for OS. Miller missed for SC's. Howdy missed for OS. Teplitz didn't even get a shot off as the ball hopped up on him (damn rink) and he ran by it for SC's. Dyke scored for OS to even the score at 1 after 3 rounds. SC's Heintz scored to give his team the upper hand at 2-1. Mahendivan was denied by Howell in round 4. The Commish, after watching Teplitz's attempt, moved slowly towards the net before making a quick deke and backhand goal to clinch the shootout 3-1 and send SC's onto the semi's. The last game of the night featured 1st place Chillin with Milan vs 4th place Mike's Groin. MG gave CWM all they could handle for the first 2 periods as they outplayed/out chanced the top seeded team looking for an upset but were constantly denied by Tardivo. Late in the 3rd the game turned on a high sticking penalty and CWM benefited from a point shot from Clow that ricocheted right to Zimmerman who buried the GWG with 3 minutes left that broke the hearts of MG and ended their season.

The Semi's were both great games and it started with Marshmallows vs Nocturnal Emishan. The teams played a scoreless 1st when NE's Colaluca scored halfway through the 2nd before the M's captain Popkin scored with just over a minute left to send the game to the 3rd tied at 1. The 3rd period was full of chances as both goalies (Erb and Ward) made clutch saves for their teams including two by Ward at the end of the 3rd. Hines was denied on a point blank chance as Ward made a big blocker saved followed by a breakaway by Genest in the dying seconds that Ward came out and made a huge stop on to save his team's season. Six minutes into OT, Houston scored on a slap shot from the center line to send M's into the finals and end the season of NE in heartbreaking fashion. The second game featured division rivals Chillin with Milan vs Second Chances. CWM wasted no time getting started as they scored on a nice 2 on 1 with Kalender finishing off the play less than a minute into the game and that score held through the end of the period. SC's tied the game up 2 minutes into the 2nd on a goal from Dunner. CWM caught a break late in the 2nd on a goal by the league's leading scorer, Trzeciak, who may or may not have been offsides but made a nice move around the dman and deked the goalie to score to give his team the 2-1 lead after two. Both teams traded chances but Tardivo locked the game down and sent his CWM team to the championship game.

The finals featured both first place teams, Marshmallows vs Chillin with Milan, which almost never happens in the Draft League. CWM's Trzeciak had a quality scoring chance hop right over his stick a minute in and M's got on the board first on a goal from the point by Jacob. M's were all over CWM at this point as Dunn hit the crossbar right after that (originally called in but correctly overturned) and the 1-0 lead held after one. CWM's Zimmerman tied the score at 1 just 3 minutes into the 2nd on a goal knocked in by a M's player and they almost took the lead a few minutes later as Trzeciak and Kalender had a 2 on 1 that they just couldn't convert on and the teams were tied in the finals after two. Five minutes into the 3rd Popkin had a quality scoring chance turned away by Tardivo and a few minutes later CWM's Trzeciak had a monster slap slot turned away by Ward. The teams were back and forth before M's Houston wound up and scored again from the center line with a similar slap shot to the one last week in the semi's (CWM didn't get the scouting report I guess) with 3 minutes left in the game. M's iced the game with an ENG from captain Popkin in the last minute for the 3-1 final. Congrats to team captain Popkin as well as many of the first time Cup winners on the squad. Congrats to playoff MVP Tom Houston, MVF Adam Zimmerman of CWM and MVG George Ward of M's.

Congrats also to the regular season league leaders: Anthony Trzeciak of CWM with 14 points, Justin Doyle of FF's with 9 goals and George Ward with both 7 wins and a 1.50 GAA. Good luck to everyone in season 21 of the Draft League. I hope everyone enjoys the new 2 layered Cup thanks to the handy work of one Milan Peich as well as the new surface which is ready to be played on.
