Stick Vendor Wins

The playoffs in Draft League Season 21 started off with a great game between Sticks and Stones and Nice Shot Phil. Jeziorski scored for NCP just 4 minutes into the game followed by another NCP goal by Douglass just 4 minutes later. After controlling most of the 1st period NCP gave up a goal to SAS's Lewis with just 12 seconds left in the period to change the game. After 14 plus minutes of no goals SAS's once again struck at the very end of a period on a goal by Tremblay with just 15 seconds left to send the game into the 3rd tied at 2. SAS's Benson scored just 2 minutes into the 3rd for what turned out to be the game winning goal in a 3-2 victory. After the game NCP was heard asking to change the periods to 14 minutes long instead of 15. The next game ended up being the game of the week between Dirty Water and the favored Fueled By Fast Food. The teams played hard for 2 periods but were constantly denied by DW's Webb and FBFF's Erb so the game was scoreless going into the 3rd. FBFF scored on a late PP with 5 minutes left in the game which seemed as if it may hold as the GWG. DW pulled their keeper and kept the pressure on Erb until a redirection by Barrett went into the net with 8 seconds left in the game on a nice pass from Miller. The teams traded quality chances in OT but nobody could score the GW so the teams went to a shootout since it was the 1st round. FBFF's Genest missed and DW's Van scored which was all that was needed to win the SO 1-0. FBFF had misses from Clow, Hines, Kelley and Freimann and DW had misses from Diamon, Miller and Gleeson and didn't need the 5th shooter. The next game was between the top seeded and favored Bear in Universe versus the last place Discount Lumber. DLs captain Skaggs scored just 4 minutes in for 1-0 lead after one. DL exploded in the 2nd on goals from Woodward (SH), Hawk and Mahtesian to pretty much seal this one at 4-0 after 2. Fibbi added an EN for the 5-0 spanking of the top seed. This is why we play the games. The last game of the night was between top seeded Denny's Grand Slam and last place Prima Dunnas and this was also a top notch game. DGS got on the board first about 8 minutes in a goal from Fiorello for a 1-0 lead after one. DGS's Evans scored about halfway through the 2nd for a 2-0 lead after two. PD's Kevin Mamon scored a goal just over a minute in to tighten this game up but they just couldn't get the tying goal until pulling their goalie in the last minute. This is when B-Rob scored with 36 seconds left to send this last game of the night to OT. Both teams were shut out in OT by PD's Ward and DGS's French, who was filling in for Bender, so another game went to a shoot out for the fans. Both teams missed their first shots before DGS got goals from Jordan and Fiorello for a 2-0 lead that clinched the game. Misses for PD's were Fitz, Leadston, McDonough and Dunn with no 5th shooter. The misses from DGS were from Evans and Wilt. This is the first time in Draft League History with 2 shootouts.

The semi's started out with a game between Discount Lumber and Stick and Stones. The teams felt each other out in the 1st with a scoreless period. Denne got SAS on the board first 6 minutes in and this was the only goal of the period. As the game wound down DL's Woodward stepped up yet again and scored with a little less than 3 minutes left in the game to send it to OT. SAS's Howell and DL's Petron kept the game scoreless through the 1st OT. DL's Fibbi won the game for his team 8 minutes into the 2nd OT on a pass from Skaggs. The 2nd game featured Denny's Grand Slam vs Dirty Water. The teams played mostly defensive hockey early in the game and the teams were still scoreless after two. DW had the bulk of the chances in the 3rd but couldn't get anything past G Sub French. DGS starting getting momentum in the 1st OT but were denied time and time again by Webb. DW finally won the game about 8 minutes in on a goal from the point by Miller off a face off win by Barrett. The league's parity continues with this league with 2 double OT games.

The finals were a match up of teams that were not expected to make the finals. The 4th seeded Discount Lumber vs 3rd seeded Dirty Water. DW had a great start in the early part of the 1st period but were unable to net any goals. DL's Mahtesian was denied by DW's Webb but the ball went right back to him and he buried his 2nd chance to give his team a 1-0 lead after the 1st. The teams battled in the 2nd but no goals were scored. DW pressed hard in the 3rd and controlled most of the play but were throttled over and over by G Sub Howell, who was on top of his game. DW pulled their keeper in hopes of more late game heroics and had chances but couldn't get it done and DL finished a rough regular season as Draft League Champions. Congrats to playoff MVP Chris Fibbi of DL, DW's MVP Scott Webb and MVD Woodward of DL.

Congrats to the Regular Season Leaders: 10 Goals from Justin Doyle and Chris Kalender; 15 points also from Chris Kalender; 6 wins a piece from George Kunin and TJ Howell; 1.44 GAA from Zach Tardivo

Congrats to Eddie Desabetino who won his 1st Draft League Cup and good luck to Tim Kelley who left us and moved back to MI. Good luck to everyone in Draft League Season 22.
