The Mantis Survive the Fury

The D2 playoffs started off with a bang as the 4/5 match up between Iced Out and Stingrays had plenty of excitement. IO jumped on the board first with a goal from Olson assisted by Newkirk. IO held the lead with strong D and solid goaltending from Tardivo until the SR's pulled their goalie in the last minute. The SR's Vove scored with just 8 seconds left to send this match into OT. In the OT both teams were turned away by Erb and Tardivo which sent this game into a 5 player shootout. The first 7 shooters missed before the SR's Duggan converted which was enough for the victory 2-1 (1-0). The 2nd game between 3rd seeded Fury and 6th seeded Group Therapy was also a low scoring affair. Both teams couldn't fine the net throughout regulation as keepers Fiorello and Mitchell kept everything out of their nets. The F must've been tired as they wanted to end this OT early and that's exactly what they did when Kelly struck just 48 seconds into the session assisted by Hoff. The next 2 games of the quarters were held a week later due to rain. The 2nd seeded Loud Mouths took on 7th seeded Top Shelf. TS is a veteran team that took an early lead 5 minutes into the game on a goal from Christiano. A goal by J. Esposito with just 2 minutes left in the opening frame made it 2-0 after one. The LM's scored just 3 minutes into the 2nd to tighten this game up on an unassisted goal by Skaggs before Christiano struck again to restore the 2 goal lead for TS. The LM's couldn't get their O going in this game and an ENG by Walker sealed the 4-1 TS victory. The last D2 game had the top seeded Mantis against the 8th seeded Blues Brothers. BB's had a solid start to the game before M got on the board late in the 1st on a goal from Ulner. Ulner struck again for M a few minutes into the 2nd and Karp scored a 4 on 4 goal halfway through the 3rd to ice the 3-0 win.

The semifinals started out with the top seeded Mantis against 7 th seeded Top Shelf. The teams played a scoreless 1st before TS team captain Turner scored halfway into the 2nd on a feed from Van. M scored 2 minutes into the 3rd on a goal by Fibbi from Sonnenberg. The teams couldn't push anything else past Bailey or Coladonato and the game went to OT. The 1st OT had barely gotten underway when M's Skiavo fed Karp in the slot and he buried it breaking the upset minded TS squad's backs in the process. The other semi featured Fury versus the Stingrays. F was without their regular keeper Erb and top scorer Vivirito and it showed as they were run over. The F scored 1st period goals from Mooney and Kelly for an early 2-0 lead. Mooney scored again in the 2nd and another by Rice later made it 4-0 after the 2nd. The SR's got on the board early in the 3rd by, ex top 10er, Fish before the SR's matched that on a goal from Woodward. The SR's Barzilai scored 6 minutes into the 3 rd for the 5-2 final.

The finals figured to be a low scoring affair from the top defensive teams in D2. Top seeded Mantis up against a Fury team looking for their first D2 Championship.

The teams traded scoring chances in a scoreless 1st period. M struck first 4 minutes into the 2nd on a goal by Karp from Skiavo and the score remained that way through two. F was constantly turned away by Coladonato and brought tremendous pressure in the last minute but couldn't get the equalizer to go in. A last second shot by Woodward went wide and the F fell in the finals again in another tough loss. Kevin Fay received the D2 Cup in his 1st season as Mantis' captain. Congrats to post season MVP Justin Karp of Mantis (scored in every game), MVG Steve Coladonato of Mantis (an absurd 0.33 GAA) and Pat Kelly who was the Fury's post season MVP (2 Goals including and OT winner)

Congrats also to the D2 regular season MVP's: Justin Vivirito of the Stingrays with 9 Goals AND 12 Points Steve Coladonato of Mantis with 7 Wins AND a super low 0.78 GAA

It looks like Mantis gets the promotion to D1 and Heavy Breathers get relegated to D2. Good luck to everyone in the Spring '13 season set to start on March 3rd…
