Gladiators Win 1st D1 Cup

The D1 playoffs started off with an outstanding game between the 4th seeded Hitmen and the 5th seeded Haze. The HA jumped on the board first with a PPG from Mahtesian to give his team a 1-0 lead after one. The teams were scoreless in the 2nd before D'Agnillo blasted a shot past Makowsky just 30 seconds into the 3rd to tie the game up on a feed from Lee. The teams traded quite a few chances before finally heading to OT. The HI's Lee went high on a mostly empty net halfway thru the OT. With only 3 minutes separating these teams from a 1st round shootout Mahtesian struck again knocking a shot out of midair to send the Haze into the semi's. The next game featured the 2nd ranked Gladiators versus the 7th seeded Phantoms. The G's struck first as Giovia banged in a long rebound with about 3 minutes to go in the 1st. The teams played a scoreless 2nd before the P's finally got on the board 2 minutes into the 3rd on a goal by Broger in front of the net off of a faceoff win. The P's gained momentum from the goal and brought a ton of pressure that was turned away by a red hot Tardivo in net including a huge butt end save on Dunner. About halfway thru the 3rd their was a goalmouth scramble for the ball with a ton of bodies and before the puck could be covered or cleared Giovia banged in another which turned out to be the game winner as the G's kept the P's from reaching a 6th straight championship game. The next game featured the 3rd ranked Sparks vs. the 6th seeded Plague. The P jumped on the board first with a nice goal from dman Lawson. The S's matched this with a PPG from Dyke and the teams were tied at 1 after the 1st. The P took a 2-1 lead on goal from Skaggs about 6 minutes in but the S's Roby matched that a few minutes later. The S's took the lead on a goal by Kalender with about a minute left for a 3-2 lead after two. The P struck quickly in the 3rd to tie the game on a goal from Skiavo. Insley restored his team's lead a few minutes later and iced the game with another with a little over 5 minutes to play for the hard fought 5-3 win. The only mismatch of the week featured the top seeded Sin City vs. the 8th seeded Heavy Breathers who hung tough most of their 1st season up in D1 . Tonight wasn't their night missing one of their young guns as SC pounded them early and often on goals from Hines(3), Zimmerman(2), Clark and Vivirito for a 7-0 blowout win.

The semi's started off with top seeded Sin City facing off against the 5 th seeded Haze. The H scored a PPG from Green about halfway into the 1 st and that was it for the scoring in the opening period. SC carried most of the play in the 2 nd but couldn't beat Makowksy in net including a great save on Denne. The H's Wilt had a breakaway right after the penalty but couldn't beat Bender. The H's Green struck again with about 6 minutes left on an unassisted goal from the high slot for a 2-0 lead that held and put the H back in the finals for the first time in over 4 years. The other game was another defensive battle between the Gladiators and the Sparks. The teams played a scoreless 1st before D. Clow scored on a blast from the point to put the S's up 1-0 early in the 2nd. The G's Young ripped a shot past Webb early in the 3rd to tie the game up at 1. The teams couldn't get the game winner in regulation

so they went to OT where a bad bounce did the S's in as Giovia netted the game winner when he threw a shot/pass to the front of the net and it hit off of dman's leg and past Webb for the win. The S's seem to have the luck of the Washington Capitals in the playoffs.

The finals featured teams that had some bad blood from offseason poaching/free agency as the Haze took the Gladiators top scorer Jerry Green and dman Matt Benson. The G's used this as motivation for their run to the finals. The teams had met previously in the finals 4-5 years ago with the H coming out victorious 2-1. This game started out a little slow with both teams getting a feel for each other and the H's Douglass just missed an EN while falling down and both teams had a PP. The H struck first early in the 2nd as Phillips scored on a shot from the point to put his team up 1-0. The G's had a 5 on 3 in the 2nd but couldn't produce a goal but Young tied the game up with a blast with 4 minutes left in the period to tie the game at 1 going to the 3rd. The G's kept the momentum and struck in the 1st minute of the 3rd on a highlight reel goal from Giovia, who ran from the bench to the slot and scored falling down, on a nice feed from Alexandre. The G's almost struck again a minute later as Mercurio was open in the slot but couldn't expand their lead. The H got a PP with a little over 4 minutes to play which was a 2 man advantage for almost a full 2 minutes but couldn't beat Tardivo and an exhausted group of penalty killers. The H had one last chance on another PP in the last minute but couldn't net the equalizer and the G's celebrated their 1st D1 Championship after almost folding in the offseason. Congrats to playoff MVP Jake Giovia who scored game winning goals In all 3 playoff wins for the G's, MVD Pat Young also of the G's and the H's playoff MVP Jerry Green.

Congrats to all of the regular season leaders as well: Ryan Contreras with 16 points, Felice D'Agnillo with 10 Goals And Scott Webb with 7 Wins and a 1.67 GAA. Good luck to all teams in the Spring '13 season set to start March 3 rd.
