Nando's Sponsorship Sends the SCS to D1

The D2 playoffs started out with a play in game between the 8th seeded GB Top Shelf and the 9th seeded Stingrays. GBTS scored first on a goal from Beauregard just 3 minutes into the 1st. The teams played a scoreless 2nd and with the SR's pushing for the equalizer Turner hit the empty net to lead his team into the quarters with a 2-0 victory. The next game was between the 4th seeded Iced Out and 5th seeded Group Therapy. GT's Martin put his team on the board just 5 minutes in for a 1-0 lead after the 1st. King scored to push the lead to 2-0 before Caudana scored about halfway through the period for a commanding 3-0 lead. IO's MacGregor scored a goal with a minute left to make it 3-1 going into the 3rd. With just under 2 minutes left Caudana struck again this time into the empty net for a 4-1 GT victory. Top seeded Blues Brothers took on a GB Top Shelf squad coming off their play in victory just an hour before. The teams played a tight low scoring game for the 1st and most of the 2nd before BGTS's Turner gave his team a 1-0 lead with just a minute left in the 2nd. BB's entered the 3rd a little apprehensive about an upset but managed to score a little over 8 minutes in on a goal from Agostinelli to tie the score at 1. The teams couldn't muster another in the 3rd and went to OT tied at 1. Just over 3 minutes in BB's Bowser made sure his team wouldn't be upset and scored on a nice shot for the win. The 2nd seeded Mantis looked for a 3rd win of the season against the newest D2 team, Grant Thornton. M's Barbarash gave his team and early lead just 4 minutes in which was quickly matched by GT's Kurtzman a few minutes later. Barbarash would score again for M with 5 minutes left in the 1st to give his team a 2-1 lead after one. GT's captain Chiarenza tied the game up at 2 just over 5 minutes into the 2nd and the teams would go to the 3rd all tied up. Chiarenza would strike again for GT halfway through which ended up being the game winner to upset the 2nd seeded M squad. The last D2 game of the night featured 3rd seeded Sioux City Sarsaparilla vs. 6th seeded Fury. After a scoreless 1st F's Mooney gave his team a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd for a 1-0 lead after two. SCS started pressing in the 3rd and it finally paid off with a goal from J. Bailey about halfway thought the period. The momentum of this game totally swung one way and SCS scored again with just under 4 minutes left on a goal from Abraham which proved to be the game winner and sent SCS to the semifinals the next week.

Round 2 started off with a game between top seeded Blues Brothers and Grant Thornton playing without their captain. The teams played a scoreless 1st before BB's Senatorov picked a great time for his 1st goal of the season halfway through the 2nd. Giannotti would strike to give BB's a 2-0 lead with 3 minutes left in the middle frame. Senatorov would score again off a great feed from Bowser to give his team a comfortable 3-0 lead going to the 3rd. A little over 5 minutes in the BB's Ingram would score to pretty much ice this game at 4-0. A late goal by Burliman for GT would make the final score 4-1 and send BB's back to the finals for the first time in numerous years. The 2nd game featured 3rd seeded Sioux City Sarsaparilla against 5th seeded Group Therapy. After a scoreless 1st SCS's Trzeciak scored to give his team a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd. GT's Hanson would match that about halfway through the period for a 1-1 game going into the 3rd. About 5 minutes into the 3rd SCS's Isom scored a huge goal to give his team the lead. With about 3 minutes left SCS would score again on a goal from Abraham for a commanding 2 goal lead. An empty net goal by Blessing would make the final score 4-1.

In the finals 3rd seeded Sioux City Sarsaparilla took on top seeded Blues Brothers for the right to move up to D1 in March '14. SCS's Blessing scored about 6 minutes into the 1st for a quick 1-0 lead which stood as the only goal of the 1st. BB's captain Kourt would tie the game late in the 2nd on a pass from Agostinelli to send the game to the crucial 3rd all square. Keepers Bailey and Cuccinelli fought off shot after shot and the teams seemed destined for OT in the last minutes of the 3rd. With just under a minute left in the finals Abraham scored the most important goal in his team's history to give his team a 2-1 lead which they held to win the D2 Cup for SCS. Playoff MVP from SCS was Matt Blessing, playoff MVG was Wes Bailey and the BB's MVP of the playoffs was Tommy Bowser. Congrats to captain Ryan Greeney and Anthony Trzeciak who won both SUN Cups and can play against/for their Phantoms next season in D1.

Congrats to the D2 regular season stat leaders: Tommy Bowser of Blues Brothers with an absurd 21 points, Iced Out's Rob MacGregor with 11 Goals in a little over half of a season, Steve Coladonato with an amazingly low 0.67 GAA, Steve and 3 other goalies all tied with 5 wins this regular season.

Great job on another season with parity all around as usual. We welcome Heavy Breathers back to D2 as SCS moves up to D1. Have a great winter, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and see everyone for the new Super Sunday seasons which start up on Sunday, March 2nd. Until then we will have some SUN pick up as well as the Winter Draft League on WED nights and hopefully a happy hour or two.
