Fury finally Win D2 after many heartbreaks in the finals

The Spring '14 D2 playoffs started off with a great game between Blues Brothers and Group Therapy. GT's D. Jacobeen got his team on the board just 4 minutes but the BB's tied it up with just a minute left on a goal from Kourt. The teams played a scoreless 2nd before GT's Yanchus gave his team another lead about 5 minutes into the 3rd with a 4 on 4 goal. The BB's wouldn't give up and tied the game up with just over 2 minutes left on a goal from Giannotti to send this matchup into OT. The teams couldn't beat Cuccinelli or Mitchell so the teams went to the dreaded, 1st round only, shootout. GT's D. Jacobeen quickly put his team up 1-0 before Gusto tied it up. Lawrence scored in the 4th round of the SO for BB's and when GT's Martin and Hanson were denied BB's squeaked by with a 3-2 (2-1 in SO) victory. The next game had Iced Out taking on Fury. F's Mooney struck early in the 1st for a 1-0 lead after the 1st. Mooney struck again with a 5 on 3 PPG five minutes into the 2nd and Brachman scored with just over a minute left to make it 3-0 for F. F's Mooney wasn't finished and completed his hat trick with just 3 seconds left in the 2nd to ice the game that finished 4-0 as IO had no offense without their top scorer. The 3rd game was a battle between top seeded Mantis and the last place Stringrays. The S's Keeler jumped on M with a goal just 2 minutes into the game which held as the only goal until the 3rd. In the 3rd M finally got going on a goal from Haughton 5 minutes in which was followed by another from Skiavo a few minutes later. That goal proved to be the game winner in M's 2-1 tightly contested victory. The last 1st round game was between the 7th seeded Heavy Breathers and 2nd seed Top Shelf. The teams played a scoreless 1st before HB's Jake Giovia opened the scoring a minute into the 2nd and Bookbinder made it 2-0 a little over halfway through the period. Not to be outdone by his son Joe Giovia pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal of his own with just 2 minutes left in the period. In the 3rd HB's added to their lead with a goal from Drian for a very comfortable 4 goal lead. TS's Turner would score to make it 4-1 but Quinlan would make it 5-1 with just 2 minutes left before TS's Vita would score to complete the 5-2 final.

In the semis Fury took on the Blues Brothers in what looked like a solid defensive matchup. The teams traded some chances in the first 2 periods but were turned away by Fiorello and Cuccinelli and headed into the crucial 3rd scoreless. The BB's would get on the board first with a goal from Miccile from Long 5 minutes in which seemed as if it may hold as the game winner but F's Jeziorski tied it up with just over 4 minutes left on an assist from Woodward. The game would head to OT tied at 1 when the F's Mooney won it for his team with an impressive unassisted goal just 3 minutes in to crush the BB's hope of winning a championship this season. The other semifinal game was between Heavy Breathers and top seeded Mantis. HB's would get on the board first on a goal from league veteran MacQuarrie which was the only goal of the first 2 periods. M would finally get on the board 2 minutes into the 3rd on a goal from Sukhorukov. With 6 minutes left in the game Sukhorukov would strike again to give his team the lead for good and ENG's from Barbarash and Jones would ice the 4-1 M victory.

In the Championship Game top seeded Mantis took on the 3rd seeded Fury looking for their first D2 Cup in a classic final. F would get the scoring started late in the 1st on a goal from Holtzman with just a minute left. Halfway through the 2nd F would go on a 2 man advantage and Calisti took advantage netting a PPG to give his team a solid 2-0 lead going into the 3rd. M kept bringing the heat in the 3rd and finally broke through with another goal on the PP from Sukhorukov with just under 9 minutes left. With just over a minute left M pulled their keeper in desperation to try to tie the game up and they did just that with a goal from Wyrobeck from Haughton to send his team and bench into a frenzy and the game into OT. Both teams had quality chances to win the game early in OT but were constantly denied by keepers Coladonato and Fiorello. At 7:13 of the 1st OT F's McCarron scored the the Cup Clinching Goal on a sweet shot to finally win that D2 Championship his team had been craving. The game was an instant classic and one of the best and most entertaining D2 Finals in league history. Congrats to playoff MVP Pat Kelly of Fury, MVD Jon Woodward also of Fury and Tony Haughton who edged out Kirill Sukhorukov for playoff MVF of Mantis. Good luck to everyone in the Summer/Fall '14 D2 season.

Congrats to the regular season stat's leaders in D2: Rob MacGregor of Iced Out led the league with 16 points Tommy Bowser of Blues Brothers led the league with 11 goals Ben Fiorello of Fury led the goalies with a 1.67 GAA Steve Coladonato of Mantis and Scott Mitchell of Group Therapy both tied with 6 wins each.
