Glads Win 2nd D1 Cup in 4 seasons

The Spring '14 D1 Playoffs started off with a great defensive match up between the 4th seeded Gladiators and the 5th seeded Sin City. The game lived up to its billing as the teams played 2 scoreless periods before Fiorello put SC up a goal early in the 3rd on an assist from Zimmerman. The goal seemed as if it may stand as the game winner but the G's got goal by Keeler in the last minute to tie the game up and send it to OT. The teams traded chances and just when it was looking like an unwanted shootout Lewis won the game for his G's with just 15 seconds left in OT. The next game featured the 2nd seeded Haze vs the 7th seeded Ducks/Old Plague. The H's Mahtesian got his team on the board just 2 minutes in for a 1-0 lead after one. Back to back goals by Wagner and another by O'Keefe gave the H an insurmountable 4-0 lead going to the 3rd. The D's Terrana got his team on the board about halfway through the 3rd before Green finished off the scoring for the H in this 5-1 stomping. The next game featured teams that meet in the playoffs quite often as the 3rd seeded Hitmen took on the 6th seeded, and defending Champions, Phantoms. The P's Greeney got his team on the board first halfway through the 1st on a rocket shot from the point. The H got the defensive game they wanted in a scoreless 2nd and most of the way through the 3rd waiting to tie the game up. That didn't happen as P's veteran Greenwell iced the game with 3 minutes left to put his team through to the next round. The last game of the night had top seeded MD Sparks vs the 8th seeded and short handed Sioux City Sarsaparilla. SCS was ready from the opening face-off and got goals from Giesecke and Bailey in the first 5 minutes to shock the MDS. MDS captain Roby got his team on the board 11 minutes into the 2nd to make the score 2-1 going to the 3rd. MDS's Mach tied the game up just a minute into the 3rd. A SCS PP halfway through the 3rd was the turning point of the game, but not for them, as they gave up a SHG to C. Jensen to rattle the team. A couple of late chances by SCS were turned away and C. Jensen added an ENG for the 4-2 escape by MDS in a very entertaining game.

In the semi's the Haze took on the Youngless Gladiators in what turned out to be an awesome high scoring game. The G's Chiarenza got his team on the board 1st with just 2 minutes left in the 1st for a 1-0 lead after one. Alexandre scored to build the G's lead to 2-0 and just a few minutes later the floodgates opened as Keeler and Giovia scored to give them a very secure 4-0 lead. The H called timeout and were able to score a late 2nd period goal by O'Keefe with just a minute left to try to build some momentum going into the 3rd. Just 3 minutes in a PPG by Green cut the lead to 4-2 and a goal by the H's Phillips shrunk the lead to just one at 4-3 with 4 minutes still remaining. After a valiant comeback effort by the H they finally ran out of time and the G's held on for the 4-3 victory to move into the finals. The other semi's featured the top seeded MD Sparks vs their playoff nemesis, and 6th seeded, Phantoms. The P's jumped on the board first on a goal by Broger with just 2 minutes left for a 1-0 lead after one. The teams played a scoreless 2nd as French and Webb kept the teams at bay. About halfway through the 3rd Broger struck again for the P's for a huge 2-0 lead. The MDS wouldn't give up and caught a huge break with an apparent offsides goal by Kalender with just a minute and a half left. The team brought the house at the P's the last minute and just couldn't tie the game up as the P's defeated the MDS for the 7th straight time in the playoffs with the majority of those being 1 goal games.

The finals featured the 4th seeded Gladiators, trying for their 2nd D1 Cup, vs the defending Champs and 6th seeded Phantoms. The G's got an early goal on a fortunate bounce as a pass in front went off of the foot of Lewis for a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes. The P's got a PP halfway through the 1st and a badly timed miscommunication between 2 players led to the G's Mercurio racing down for a breakaway which he capitalized on for a huge goal and 2-0 lead. The G's Keeler would add to the their lead in the 2nd for a 3-0 lead. Late in the 3rd the P's Dunner scored on a controversial goal that had his stick making contact with the ball around the crossbar to give his team a little momentum going into the 3rd down 3-1. The P's carried the play in the 3rd but couldn't get anything by the G's Tardivo who was on in net and with 2 late empty net goals in the last minute the score looked like a blowout in a pretty close game. The G's celebrated and sent Tommy Bowser back to Pittsburgh with a D1 Championship. Congrats to post season MVP Sam Keeler of the Gladiators and MVF Billy Broger of the Phantoms.

Congrats to all of the D1 regular season award winners:
Jerry Green of the Haze led all players with 13 points
Billy Broger of the Phantoms and Jake Denne of Sin City tied with 8 goals each
Mike Makowsky of the Haze led all goalies with a 1.20 GAA
Scott Webb of the MD Sparks led the way with 8 Wins

Good luck to everyone in the Summer/Fall '14 D1 season already underway with the Fury replace Sioux City Sarsaparilla.
