Mantis Dominates D2 Playoffs After 1st Round Scare

The first playoff game in the Fall '14 D2 playoffs was between 3rd seeded Mantis and 6th seeded Sioux City Sarsaparilla. SCS was the dominant team from the opening face off but they couldn't capitalize on any of their zone time and scoring chances and M struck first with a goal from Sukhorukov with 2 minutes left in the period for a 1-0 lead after one. M's Wyrobeck struck late in the 2nd to give his team a huge 2 goal lead though SCS's captain Greeney scored in the final seconds of the 2nd to get his team within a goal going into the 3rd. SCS brought more pressure in the 3rd but M keeper O'Connell kept them off of the board and M escaped the first round with a 2-1 victory. The next game was between the 4th seeded Stingrays and the 5th seeded Heavy Breathers. HB's defenesemen O'Sullivan opened the scoring for his team with 4 minutes left in the 1st for a 1-0 lead after one. The SR's Dove tied the game up just 2 minutes into the 2nd before the HB's got hot and scored back to back goals by Colaluca and P. Feinstein for a 3-1 lead. The SR's got a huge goal from Keeler with just a minute left in the 2nd to only trail by a goal going to the 3rd. The SR's fed off of that late 2nd period tally and Barzalai struck for them 5 minutes into the 3rd to tie the game up at 3. Neither team could find the twine the rest of the 3rd and the game went to OT where just 46 seconds in the SR's Keeler struck again with the OT game winner to send his team to the semi's and stick a dagger in the HB's playoff hopes. The 3rd quarterfinal game was between top seeded Group Therapy and 8th seeded Blue Brothers. GT got off to a flying start with 2 goals from Martin a minute in as well as halfway through the 1st for a 2-0 head start. The BB's Salvado scored with 5 minutes left in the 1st to send the game to the 2nd 2-1. After a scoreless 2nd GT's Hanson would score in the 3rd for a solid 3-1 lead before ENG's by Hanson and Martin iced the game and 5-1 final. The last game of the night featured 2nd seeded Iced Out against 7th seeded Top Shelf. IO's Fasani struck first just 5 minutes in before TS's Vita matched it with a goal with 5 minutes left in the opening frame for a 1-1 game after one. IO's Shaughnessy scored a SHG to give his team a 2-1 lead before Turner tied it up at 2 going to the 3rd. TS's Turner would strike again just a minute into the 3rd for a 3-2 lead but it was short lived as IO's Shaughnessy struck again 2 minutes later to tie the game at 3. Both teams couldn't find the net the rest of the 3rd and the game went into OT where TS's captain Turner finished off his playoff hat trick just 2:16 in to propel his team into the next round in fashion.

The first semifinal game featured Mantis vs the Stingrays and the Commish was out of town so the starts are as follows. Mantis steamrolled the Stingrays 6-2 on goals from Barbarash (3), Jones Jr., Persichetti and Sukhorukov with Coladonato in net. The Stingrays goals were scored by Minydzak and Schwartz with Erb in net. The other semifinal game was between Group Therapy and Top Shelf with no Commish and stat details so the stats are below. Top Shelf took down Group Therapy 3-0 on goals from Turner twice and Vita with a shutout from Sampson in net.

The finals were a battle between 3rd seeded Mantis and 7th seeded Top Shelf. M's Sukhorukov scored for the 3rd straight playoff game to give his team a jumpstart just 6 minutes in. M's Wyrobeck scored a short handed goal with 3 1/2 minutes left to give his team a 2-0 lead. TS's Miller got his team back in the game with a goal with only 15 seconds left in the period to cut the lead in half going to the 2nd. M's Barbarash restored his teams 2 goal lead with a 4 on 4 goal with 5 minutes left in the 2nd to send his team to the 3rd up 3-1. M's league veteran Skiavo pretty much wrapped the game up with an unassisted goal just 13 seconds into the 3rd for a 4-1 lead. M's Persichetti and Wyrobeck, with his 2nd of the game, finished off the scoring and Top Shelf's season in a 6-1 rout to win the D2 Championship for the 3rd time in Mantis' history. Congrats to playoffs MVP Brian Barbarash of Mantis, MVF Craig Turner of Top Shelf and honorable mention to Kirill Sukhorukov on Mantis.

Congrats to all of the Regular Season Leaders in D2:
Sam Keeler of the Stingrays led the league in both goals (9) and points (11)
Wes Bailey of Sioux City Sarsaparilla led all goalies with an extremely strong 1.13 GAA
Scott Mitchell of Group Therapy led all goalies with 7 regular season wins.

Congrats on another strong D2 season and I look forward to seeing all teams back in March with Fury returning to take the place of Mantis. Have a great Winter!
